To the moon and back – twice

That’s how many miles county council employees drive each year on mileage allowances.

The astonishing figure emerged through a report which included the decision to provide a mileage allowance to county council car users 3p per mile more generous than the Inland Revenue approved allowance. That extra 3p per mile will cost the county £290,000, which means that we must be paying for people to drive 9.7 million miles each year – enough to travel twice to the moon and back.

Actually it will cost more than that because paying allowances above the Inland Revenue rate of 45 pence per mile also means that the county has to make hundreds or thousands of additional submissions to the taxman.

In my book – and yours I dare say – 45p per mile is more than enough. And more that £4.5 million spent across the council on mileage allowances each year is a truly disturbing figure.

Probably an awful lot cheaper than providing pool cars for staff to use. I wonder where they would be if all staff didn’t provide a car. It’s not just about reimbursing petrol, there is servicing, winter tyres and wear and tear to consider. It doesn’t cover that!

Of course it covers the additional wear and tear, etc, etc that due to business use.
£0.48 per mile is £24.00 for every gallon of fuel for a car that does 50 miles to the gallon or £14.40 for a car that does 30 miles to the gallon. Even at today’s ridiculous price for fuel, it’s nowhere near that!
We’re not just talking about DCC staff, mileage is paid to councillors going to and from County Hall and any other meetings.
Wouldn’t happen in the private sector.
One our Lib Dem proposals in the budget debate was to cut councillors’ mileage allowance to the Inland Revenue Approved Rate. Turned down by the controlling group.
